The decision to accept a new job is one of those life shaping, adrenaline pumping, stress driven moments. Some people jump in with both feet, others hesitate and worry through the night. For many, the chance of a new beginning is always attractive and a job offer intensively flattering. However, this is a time for cool heads and logical decision making.

One method when evaluating a job offer, is to suggest a Decision Making Matrix. The matrix can be used when faced with choosing between an existing job and another offer, or in weighing up several job offers. It introduces a measure of objectivity, into what can be a difficult dilemma.

The matrix is compiled by taking an A4 sheet and listing horizontally across the top the job offer(s) to be evaluated against the existing job.

Each criteria's then rated on a scale of attractiveness (1=low - 5=high). The job with the highest score is one which deserves the most serious consideration. It is not necessarily the one you will take but the matrix gives you a clear overview of the situation.

Inevitably there is an element of subjectively in rating criteria like "job satisfaction', concedes Joanne, never the less the matrix enables you to think through the process. It is a simple but very effective tool.
